Biography of Artist Joe Overstreet

Joe Wesley Overstreet was born in Conehatta, MS (near Philadelphia), on June 20, 1933.

His family moved to Berkeley, California where he spent his youth. He graduated from Oakland Technical High School in 1951.

Overstreet worked part-time leading ships with the Merchant Marines for 7 years in the 1950’s, working in the Far East, Europe, and South America.

He attended Contra Cost College in San Pablo, CA, in 1951-52, the California School of Fine Arts (1953), and California School of Arts and Crafts (1954).

He studied with sculptor Sargent Johnson and artist Raymond Howell.

From 1955 to 1957, Overstreet worked at the Walt Disney Studios as an animator. He moved to New
